ROCKFORD, Ill. -  "Why aren’t college basketball games 37 minutes?”  One can imagine the number of people repeating that refrain in their heads as they left the Seaver Center on Tuesday night after Rockford College’s women’s basketball team 60-58 loss to the Marian University Sabers.

Rockford played what could be its best and worst 20 minute periods on Tuesday.  Rockford seemed to be putting on an offensive and defensive clinic in the game’s first half.  The Regents carved Marian’s zone defense with solid passing and 50% shooting, recording 12 assists on 16 made baskets.  Eight Rockford players marked the scoring column, led my Megan Lawler’s (Pearl City, Ill./ Pearl City) near double-double, with 10 points and nine rebounds.  By the break, Rockford’s 40-23 lead looked insurmountable.

Early in the second half, Rockford extended their lead to 21 points, then everything changed.  Over the next 10 minutes, Marian went on a 23-3 run, during which Rockford committed eight turnovers and shot just 1-10.  By the five minute mark, the game’s momentum had clearly swung to the side of the Sabers, as Rockford fought to maintain a slim lead.  Over the game’s final three minutes, the Regents managed just three points via a 23 foot jumper by sophomore Britney Curry (Merrillville, Ind/ Merrillville) with 28 seconds to play to tie the game at 58.  But a foul call with six seconds to play put the Sabers on the line, where they connected of two free throws to win the game.

Lawler recorded her eighth double-double of the year with 14 points and 11 rebounds.  Curry added 13 points and seven rebounds.  Kaitlyn Sullivan (Lockport, Ill./ Lockport) and Erika McCall (Henry, Ill./ Henry Senachwine) tallied eight points each for the Regents.

Rockford will travel to River Forest, Ill. on Saturday to face Dominican University.
