BELOIT, Wis. – After last week’s difficult loss at North Central College, the Rockford College men’s basketball team got a complete team effort in defeating local rival Beloit College 88-78 at Beloit’s Flood Arena.
Early in the game, it seemed as if the Regents were simply replaying the NCC game, falling behind 13-4 just four minutes into the game. Coach Ryan Rebsom immediately went to his bench, brining his entire second unit to the floor. That was the jolt of energy the Regents needed, as the reserves erased the deficit, tying the game at 21 with 7:46 to play. Two minutes later, junior Robert Malone (Stephens, Ark./ Stephens) connected on a jumper to give Rockford their first lead of the game, one which they would not relinquish. By the half, Rockford led 41-31 on the strength of 19 bench points, led by junior reserve Tyler Nauman's (Hinckley, Ill./ Hinckley-Big Rock) eight points.
A 13-4 Beloit run early in the second half cut Rockford’s lead to one point, but the Regents responded. A 12-0 run, keyed by six consecutive free throws, pushed Rockford’s lead back to an insurmountable 15 points.
Malone led three Regents in double-figures with 20 points, while senior guard Danny Armelin (Gonzales, Texas/ Gonzales) added 19. Thirty-two of Rockford’s 88 points came off the bench, led by Nauman’s 16 and Leon Alford’s (Chicago, Ill./ St. Laurence) nine points.
Rockford will travel to Ripon, Wis. on Wednesday to face Ripon College.
