Rockford, Ill. – For much of the early portion of the 2009-10 women’s basketball season, Rockford College has had difficulty playing two consistent halves of basketball. That fact again came to bear in Saturday’s 79-59 home loss to Elmhurst College.
Though the game’s first half score was tight at 37-36, Rockford used solid defense and shooting to overcome 11 first half turnovers. Rockford shot 59.1% from the floor while holding Elmhurst to just 37.8%. Rockford showed a dominance in the paint with a 24-10 advantage in a stanza that featured six ties and four lead changes. Rockford’s leading scorers Britney Curry (Merrillville, Ind./ Merrillville) and Megan Lawler (Pearl City, Ill./ Pearl City) paced the Regents’ offense with nine points each, while Melissa Swaziek (Loves Park, Ill./ Harlem) added seven points in the first half.
A 10-2 Elmhurst run early in the second half gave the Blue Jays a commanding 51-41 lead, one which they would not relinquish. Another 12-0 run extended the Elmhurst lead to 18 points with under four minutes to play. Rockford shot just 31.8% from the floor and 50% from the free throw line in the second half. Elmhust also took control of the lane with a 22-12 advantage in the paint.
For the game, Lawler recorded another double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Curry and Swaziek added 13 and 12 points respectively.
Rockford will return to the court after a short holiday break, when they travel to Beloit College for a 1:00 p.m. game, part of a women’s and men’s doubleheader against the Buccaneers.
