Rockford College offers a course during its spring semester in speech and language development in young children, the first in a series of four graduate-level courses that lead to an Early Childhood Special Education letter of approval.
"Typical and Atypical Speech and Language Development in Young Children” (SPED 576 - 5) focuses on language acquisition and development and communication skills of young children from birth – age 5. Spring semester starts January 13 at the college.
The Early Childhood Special Education letter of approval can be issued to teachers holding either an early childhood certificate (Type 04) or a special preschool-age 21 certificate with an LBS I endorsement (Type 10). This approval, which does not expire, allows teachers to teach early childhood special education non-categorical for children up to the age of 6.
Other courses in the series include:
- SPED 576 (4) Working with Families of Young Children with Special Needs (offered summer semesters beginning 2010): Investigates strategies for developing positive and supportive relationships with families of young children (birth – age 5) with special needs.
- SPED 576 (6) Diagnosis and Assessment of Young Children with Special Needs (offered summer semesters beginning 2010): Examines nondiscriminatory identification, diagnosis, and assessment of young children (birth – age 5) with special needs.
- SPED 576 (7) Methods for Young Children with Special Needs (offered fall semesters beginning 2010): Addresses developmentally and individually appropriate methods to support social, emotional, communication, cognitive, adaptive, and motor development and learning in young children (birth – age 5) with special needs in a variety of settings, including the home, school, and community.
