(Washington, D.C.) -- U.S. Rep. Don Manzullo (R) and U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D) announced today that they have secured $800,000 in federal funds for initiatives designed to help create jobs and improve education in Rockford.

The funding is included in the 2010 Omibus Appropriations bill, which the House and Senate are expected to approve in the next few weeks.

Funded projects include the City of Rockford West Side Economic Development Initiative, securing $500,00 to help pay for infrastructure improvements needed for the Renaissance Project planned for Rockford's west side.  The project includes a medical office building, ambulance facility, retail/restaurant, bank, pharmacy, and commerical offices.

An additional $300,000 was secured to add fiber infrastructure, a modernized library and update science laboratories at Rockford College.

"These federal funds will go a long way to improve our residents' lives on Rockford's west side, provide better higher education opportunities, and help put people back to work where they belong," Manzullo said.

"Today's bill provides a signifcant investment in Rockford's economic future by creating jobs, developing infrastructure and strengthening the educational offerings of the community," added Durbin.
