They're four higher education leaders battling for the same students, but uniting for a common purpose.

The leaders of Rockford College, Rock Valley College, NIU, and U of I College of Medicine took part in a higher education forum at today's Chamber of Commerce lunch at Cliff breakers. The four are members of the Higher Education Alliance that's a group that meets a couple of times of year to talk about the importance of and challenges facing higher learning institutions as they deal with today's economy.

"There's value today in talking to the business community about our existence and what we do and that we are every day thinking and working hard to try to increase educational attainment in this area, which in fact leads to economic development," said Dr. John Peters, NIU President.

Right now the unemployment rate for high school graduates is 10.8 points higher than that of college graduates. That represents the largest gap ever between the two.
