Student athletes at Rockford College know their game on the field and on the courts. And they do a pretty good job at helping local charities too.

For the second time in two years, Rockford’s athletic teams have collected more canned foods for the hungry than all 12 of their counterparts in the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC). Their total of 3,551 cans bettered the next runner-up, Alverno College of Milwaukee, which collected 2,227 cans. The NAC Can Food Drive is held annually.

"We always say it was a team effort when we compete, and this was no exception,” said Tim Patrick, assistant to the athletic director and coordinator of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee which organized the drive.

Rockford College teams actually battled against each other for bragging rights for most cans collected. The winner of that contest was the women’s soccer and women’s tennis team which hauled in some 1,731 cans or almost half the total collected by the college.

The cans were delivered in time for Thanksgiving to three local agencies that serve the hungry and homeless – Rockford Rescue Mission, Rock River Valley Pantry, and Salvation Army.

Altogether, the NAC brought in some 17,565 cans for 15 agencies in Illinois and Wisconsin. Rockford College received a traveling trophy with the win.
