Rockford, Ill. – For the second consecutive year, the Rockford College Student Athletic Advisor Committee (SAAC) has won the Northern Athletics Conference Cans Across the Conference title. The Rockford SAAC raised 3,551 cans, winning the conference-sponsored event by over 1,300 cans.
Rockford’s cans were donated to the Rockford Rescue Mission, the Rockford Food Pantry, and the Salvation Army. In the last two years, Rockford College SAAC has donated 10,301 cans to local organizations to help those less fortunate.
"The NAC Cans Across the Conference is a great way for our students to change their world,” said interim athletic director Kristyn King. "Our student-athletes work so hard in the classroom and in competition, this gives them a great opportunity to bond together while doing something really beneficial for people in our community, especially in these difficult financial times.”
This year, the Northern Athletics Conference raised 17,565 cans for 15 different charities. Over the program’s two years, student-athletes from the 13 member schools have donated over 41,000 cans to charities throughout Illinois and Wisconsin.
The Rockford College Student Athletic Advisor Committee, which includes representatives from each of Rockford’s 17 athletic teams, provides student-athletes an opportunity to have an active role in the governance of sport on campus, in the conference, and on a national level at the NCAA.
