MEQUON, Wis. – The Rockford College men’s basketball team faced their first road and Northern Athletics Conference on Tuesday, as they traveled to Mequon, Wis. to face the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons. An uncharacteristic slow start ultimately led to a 80-70 loss for the Regents.
Once senior Garrett Staniec (Glenview, Ill./ Glenbrook South) opened the game’s scoring, someone must have put a lid on the Regents basket for the next six minutes. Just 10 minutes into the game, Rockford found itself in a very unfamiliar position, down 26-6. Five minutes later, the Falcons had extended their advantage to a game-high 24 points. A late 18-7 run by the Regents cut their deficit to 44-31 at the break.
Throughout the early portion of the second stanza, the Falcons lead hovered between 11 and 15. Each time, Rockford began to mount a comeback, the Falcons responded, eventually increasing their lead to 16 points midway through the half. A 12-2 run keyed by nine points from junior Robert Malone (Stephens, Ark./ Stephens) cut the Regents deficit to six, but Rockford would get no closer.
Senior Danny Armelin (Gonzales, Texas/ Gonzales) led the Regents with 22 points, while Malone added 20 points and Andrew Weber (Roscoe, Ill./ Roscoe) chipped in 10. Staniec grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for Rockford.
Rockford will try to return to the winning column on Saturday, when they host the MSOE Raiders as part of a NAC women’s and men’s doubleheader. The ladies will open play at 2:00 p.m., with the men to follow at 4:15 p.m..
