ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Rockford College men’s basketball team continued their high scoring offensive output on Saturday, with a 90-82 victory over visiting Clarke College. Through four games, the Regents, whose record is now standing at 3-1, are averaging 98.2 points per game.
Rockford got off to another good start as junior Robert Malone (Stephens, Ark./ Stephens) scored the game’s first six points and eight of the team’s first 11. The Crusaders managed a comeback taking a 16-15 lead at the 12:41 mark. But over the next three minutes, the Regents responded to retake the lead for good, eventually pushing their advantage to 10 points several times over the final seven minutes of the half. At the break, the Regents led 47-37 on the strength of Malone’s first half double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard Danny Armelin (Gonzales, Texas/ Gonzales) added 14 points for the Regents.
Both clubs played the second half very evenly. The Crusaders continued to mount comebacks, and each time, the Regents responded, never allowing their lead to get below three. A late 9-0 run by the Regents, one in which all five players on the court scored, extended Rockford’s advantage to 84-72 with just over three minutes to play.
For the game, Malone led the Regents with 29 points and 17 rebounds, while Armelin netted 22 points. Seniors Garrett Staniec (Glenview, Ill./ Glenbrook South) and Andrew Weber (Roscoe, Ill./ Boylan) added 16 points, seven rebounds and 13 points, 4 assists, respectively.
The Regents will hit the road on Tuesday, when they travel to Mequon, Wisconsin to face Concordia University Wisconsin in their Northern Athletics Conference opener.
