ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Rockford College men’s basketball team got back in to the winning mood with an exciting 115-108 home win over non-conference opponent Trinity International University to improve their record to 2-1.

Right from the opening tip, there was a feeling in the air of an exciting game.  Just 15 seconds into the game, Rockford junior Robert Malone (Stephens, Ark./ Stephens) recorded a steal and a breakaway dunk for the game’s opening points.  Throughout the remainder of the first half, the Regents tried to gain control of the momentum, extending their lead to as many as six points, but the Trojans continued to respond, evidenced by nine first half ties and 14 lead changes.  Senior Danny Armelin (Gonzales, Tex./ Gonzales) led Rockford in the first half with 17 points on 10-11 from the free throw line.  Junior Taylor Stinson (Schiller Park, Ill./ East Leyden) regained his outside shooting touch going 3-5 from beyond the arc, for 13 first half points.

Early in the second half, Rockford seized the momentum with a 10-0 run over a 1:09 span.  A three-pointer by Stinson, a Stinson steal and Malone dunk, a jumper by Armelin and a three-point play by senior Randon Williams (Chicago, Ill./ Westinghouse) gave Rockford a six point edge they would not relinquish.  The Trojans continued to battle, but a 10-2 Regents run in the middle of the half pushed Rockford’s lead to a game-high 10 points.  Trinity cut the Regents’ lead to three with just over two minutes to play, but Williams responded with a lay-up to push the lead back to five.  Senior Andrew Weber (Roscoe, Ill./ Boylan) connected on five free throws in the game’s final 30 seconds to ice the Rockford win.

Armelin led six Regents in double figure scoring with a career-high 33 points on 9-14 from the floor and 14-16 from the free throw line.  He also handed out a career-high nine assists.  Stinson also recorded a career-high 27 points including connecting on 7-12 from beyond the arc.  Malone finished with 18, Williams with 13, and senior Garrett Staniec (Glenview, Ill./ Glenbrook South) had 10.  Weber finished with 10 points, a game-high 10 rebounds, four assists, and three steals.  The Regents shot 61.5% from the field as a team.

Rockford will return to the Seaver Center floor on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. when they host Clarke College.
