DAVENPORT, Iowa - The Rockford College women’s basketball team got off to a rough start to their 2009-10 season with Tuesday’s 89-55 loss at St. Ambrose University. With several key players learning and adjusting to their new roles, the Regents struggled against the NAIA’s 20th ranked team in the country.
Rockford opened the scoring when junior Megan Lawler (Pearl City, Ill./ Pearl City) scored the game’s first four points. It was all down hill from that point for the Regents. St. Ambrose embarked on a 25-2 over the next 10 minutes to essentially put the game out of sight for the Regents. By the halftime break, Rockford trailed 44-24.
Not much went right for Rockford who shot just 30.8% from the field and 0-8 from behind the three-point arc. Lawler finished the game with 27 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in her first game in a Regents uniform. Britney Curry (Merrillville, Ind./ Merrillville) added eight points, nine rebounds, and five assists for the Regents.
Rockford will travel to Stevens Point, Wis. on Friday and Saturday to play in the UW-Stevens Point Pointer Invitational. Rockford will face #18 UW-Stevens Point on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and either Concordia-Morehead or St. Scholastica on Saturday.
