Pivotal Loss to Lakeland Leaves Rest of the Eagles Season in Question

Loss, (3-4, 2-2) is not a good sign for the Benedictine Eagles football team. The loss to Lakeland College, 30-14, this past weekend may have just sealed the Eagles chances of winning the Northern Athletics Conference this season. There are still three games remaining in the season, but with Concordia Wisconsin being 4-0 in the Conference, it's safe to say the Eagles are in trouble.

The Eagles defense, which ranked second in passing, allowed the Muskies to have 431 yards of total offense with 392 of those yards going through the air. Quarterback, Jake Dworak passed for 392 yards, completing 16 of his 36 attempts. He had four touchdown passes and three interceptions. 16 for 36 isn't great, but the Muskies made some big plays down the field that came back to haunt the Eagles.

The offense was suspect for BU as they only gained 173 yards of total offense on the day. Quarterback Dave Klinger threw 17 times, but only completed six passes for 155 yards while throwing two interceptions.

The Eagles secondary was tested against Lakeland passing attack and although they didn't win the battle, they came away with some interceptions.

Matt McWilliams, Mike Hatfield and Tim Shanahan each had an interception. McWilliams returned his interception for six points as only one of two scores for the Eagles.

Steven Donovan led the team with nine tackles and one sack. Hatfield, Eddie Hill Jr. and Dan Kleppin each had eight tackles. Kleppin also had two and a half sacks.

This loss puts the Eagles where they don't want to be and that's tied for third with Aurora University and Wisconsin Lutheran. The Eagles trail the NAC leading Concordia Wisconsin (4-0), Lakeland (3-1) and Concordia Chicago (3-1).

The Eagles next game is Saturday Oct. 31 at Rockford College at 1 p.m.

Every game at this point is a must win and Rockford will be a conference contest. It doesn't look good, but stranger things have happened.
