The Concordia football team finished the first half of the 2009 season with a 4-1 record, thanks to a 44-9 home win over Rockford College last week. The victory allowed the Cougars to even their Northern Athletics Conference record at 1-1.

Concordia wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard as the Cougars took the opening kick-off and marched 64 yards in six plays, with Khyree Copeland's 24-yard run down the right sideline producing the score. Following a Rockford punt, the Cougars struck again with an 82-yard drive. The big play came on Mike Marotta's 58-yard pass down the left sideline to Lukas Weeks, who was brought down at the three. On the next play, freshman Jacob Koehler took his first snap of the season and followed his blockers up the middle for the score and a 14-0 lead.

The Cougars began the second quarter with possession at the Rockford 28 following a 15-yard punt return by Mike Egebrecht. Moments later, it was Egebrecht on the receiving end of a 26-yard strike by Marotta to put the home team up by 21.

Rockford gained some life midway through the quarter as a Cougar fumble gave them a first-and-goal at the seven. The Regents cashed in three plays later to pull within 21-7, but the Cougars got the seven points back just before the half as Clinton Boyd hauled in a 12-yard pass. Concordia went to the locker room at half with a 28-7 lead.

Rockford took the second-half kick-off and threatened to close the gap but, on a fourth down play, Larry Mayne intercepted Kenneth McNeal at the 14 and returned the ball to the Concordia 38. The Cougars then embarked on another scoring march over the next 10 plays, ending in Marotta's third touchdown pass of the day, this one to Savonte Hunt for 19 yards and a 35-7 advantage.

The Cougars travel to Lakeland College in Sheboygan on Saturday (1 p.m.). Last year, Concordia recorded one of their most thrilling wins in recent years with a last-minute 35-32 victory over the Muskies on Homecoming weekend.
