Whether it’s art made out of old railroad oil cans, whiskey flasks or teapots, artist Michelle Coakes brings her unique style to the Rockford College art gallery for an exhibition October 23 – November 22, with an opening night talk October 23 by the artist at 6 p.m. and a gallery reception from 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Coakes currently teaches at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield. During the 2009 spring semester, while on sabbatical from teaching duties, she dedicated herself to experimenting with a variety of ceramic forms and surfaces.

In addition to this experimentation, Coakes continues to produce a body of work that has been evolving for several years. These forms are vessel-based, though not necessarily functional in nature. Many of these pieces are based on railroad oil cans and whisky flasks. Teapots are also a favorite choice.

The exhibition is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Tuesday, noon to 3 p.m.; Wednesday, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.; and Thursday – Saturday, 3 p.m. – 6 p.m. The gallery is closed Sunday and Monday. For more information, call the Rockford College box office at 815-226-4100. The art gallery is located in the Clark Arts Center on campus.
