A week-long series of events at Rockford College October 26-30 will focus on “unlearning” the false racial stereotypes and assumptions learned as a result of cultural influences in society, the college has announced.

“Unlearn Racism Week” includes lectures, panel discussions, and other events designed to foster racial reconciliation, cultural appreciation and an inclusive community, say event organizers.

“What we hope is that through these thought-provoking discussions and events, there will be further conversations on the topic of racism and how we can eliminate it,” says Michelle Griggs, director of the Kobe-Regent’s Center for Global Education, which is coordinating the week’s activities.

As part of the week long series, Rockford College students and staff will visit each of the area’s five high schools to conduct a seminar, “Youth Perspective on Race” to get students to reflect on their attitudes on racial issues.

“It’s just extremely important that we reach out to our high school students because many of their attitudes are formed early in life,” says Griggs.

Other activities slated during the week include:

Mon., Oct. 26: Guest speaker L.A. Malone, noon – 1 p.m. Movie: “Race Power of An Illusion,” 7 p.m.  Both in the Burpee Center.

Tues., Oct. 27: “Walk a Mile in My Shoes” cultural game/simulation, 5:30 p.m. in the Burpee Center. Movie: “Crash,” 8 p.m. in the Lion’s Den.
