Regents Drop 2 of 3 at Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ill. - The Rockford College volleyball team returned to the court on Saturday a completely different team that left last season. Gone is 70% of last year’s squad that finished the season 7-19. Head Coach Wil Christiansen took his 2009 Regents team to the Monmouth College Invitational on Saturday to get his first look at the team. Rockford came home 1-2, after falling to Monmouth College and Beloit College and defeating MacMurray College.
In the opener, the Regents fell to Beloit in five games (23-25, 25-21, 18-25, 25-20, 15-7). Rockford was led by the hitting of freshmen Emily Kauffman (Seneca, Ill./ Seneca) and Nicole Lawler (Pearl City, Ill./ Pearl City) and Megan Lawler (Pearl City, Ill./ Pearl City) who combined for 37 kills. Junior Bethany Price (Mapleton, Ill./ Limestone Community) recorded 43 assists. Defensive specialist junior Tara Dean (Janesville, Wis./ Craig) recorded 35 digs.
Rockford fell to tournament host Monmouth in the afternoon match in four games (27-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-23). Kauffman and Megan Lawler combined for 26 kills, while Price recorded 33 assists. Dean and Megan Lawler combined for 51 digs.
The Regents picked up theit first match victory of the season with a three game victory over MacMurray (25-17, 25-14, 25-17). Rockford offered a balanced attack with five players recording multiple kills and four players recording at least seven digs.
The Regents will have chances to avenge both match losses when they meet Monmouth and Beloit later in the season. The Regents will travel to Grinnell, Iowa next weekend to play in the Grinnell College Invitational, where they will face Monmouth, Grinnell, College of St. Vincent, and William Penn University.
