Summer vacation comes to an end for Rockford College students next week when the college kicks off its fall semester August 19.
Faculty and staff are busy getting classrooms and lesson plans ready and facilities are being spiffed up in preparation for the big day, college officials say.
New students will arrive this weekend (August 15) for their new student orientation which familiarizes them with college services and facilities and also helps build camaraderie and leadership skills.
Donnette Tinsley, director of student success and retention, says orientation can play a big role in how well the new students adjust to their new environment, and ultimately, their success in school. It is one reason the college has a program called RC Mentor Connections to help students in their first year.
Tinsley is responsible for orientation, which extends over four days, Saturday-Tuesday, and includes a blend of social activities, guest speakers, and informative sessions.
Among the speakers are David Coleman, also known as “The Dating Doctor,” and C.L. Lindsay, an attorney and author who will help students understand the law. And for fun, students will be treated to an ice cream social at the home of college president Robert L. Head and his wife, Sheryl, and have a chance to show their talents at a karaoke night in the college’s Lion’s Den.
While the start of school is getting near, students can still enroll. For admission information, call 815-226-4050.
