Rockford College set to launch reading specialist program

Rockford College announced today that it is starting a reading specialist track this fall as part of its master of arts in teaching (MAT) degree program.
The new track allows teachers to achieve ‘highly qualified” status as reading coaches following guidelines put in place by the No Child Left Behind Act.
Rockford College currently has a “reading teacher” track but the new “specialist” track is a step above, enabling teachers to work with their peers on staff development and perform other leadership responsibilities.
Education professor Lou Ferroli says reading teachers are typically involved in remedial reading, while the specialist role takes into consideration the reading needs of all children.
The MAT requires 36 credits and can typically be completed in three years, assuming the student enrolls in fall, spring, and summer sessions. Other tracks in the program include elementary education, secondary education, certification (both elementary and secondary), special education, and instructional strategies.
