More than 200 people gathered in Rockford today to help nonprofits help the community as the Northern Illinois Center for Nonprofit Excellence and the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois held a summit at Rockford College. The focus was on developing collaborations among nonprofits, businesses and government to address issues in the community.

This year's theme is "Shaping Our Future with Social Capital: A New Model for the Future." Nonprofit leaders say in a time of dwindling resources, these goals, like volunteerism, are crucial for their organizations.

Leaders say in a down economy, demand goes up for nonprofits. That's why it's important to educate community members and to be united, so local issues can be solved.
