More than 175 people representing area nonprofit organizations and businesses are expected to attend a nonprofit and business summit May 15, 7:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. at Rockford College.

Sponsored by the Northern Illinois Center for Nonprofit Excellence (NICNE) and the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois, the summit’s theme is “Shaping our Future with Social Capital: A New Model for the Future” and focuses on developing collaborations among nonprofits, business, and government to address common goals.

“From our experience, we know that nonprofits deliver results in remarkably fiscally prudent ways,” says Pam Clark-Reidenbach, NICNE director. “They are uniquely positioned to tap into opportunities that leverage a wide range of resources. The purpose of the summit is to bring business, government and the nonprofit sectors together for our mutual benefit and the benefit of the entire community.”

Facilitator for the summit is Jim Pirages, an attorney with Hinshaw & Culbertson and chair of the board for the community foundation, who will join local business leaders in discussing the social and economic impact of nonprofits and building social capital, that is, developing connections between various sectors and networks.

Examples of how agencies work together with each other and with the business sector and government abound, says Linda Sandquist, the community foundation’s director of marketing and public relations.

“Especially in this environment of dwindling resources, it’s important that we work together to get things done and better serve our clientele,” she says. “There are many fine examples of this occurring in Rockford, but the opportunities exist for more.”

Other summit partners include the Rockford Chamber of Commerce, Rockford Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, Rockford Area Economic Development Council, Rockford Health Council, United Way of Rock River Valley, and nonprofit representatives.

The event will be held in Rockford College’s Regents Hall located in the Burpee Center.

NICNE helps build capacity among nonprofit organizations to reach their highest levels of service and management excellence by providing information, education, consultation and resource support.  The Community Foundation of Northern Illinois is the area’s leading provider of grants and scholarships. Its mission is to promote philanthropy, grow permanent resources for the future, and to assist local non-profits.
