Rockford College continues to monitor the H1N1 (swine flu) virus, and is ready for any contingency in the event the infection spreads.
College officials say they are in regular contact with local and state health authorities and are at a heightened level of preparedness. There are no reports of the flu on campus, and staff in the college’s Lang Center for Health, Wellness, and Counseling hope it stays that way.
The college continues to publicize prevention measures on campus, including e-mails to students, faculty and staff, and posters around campus urging people to wash their hands often and use common sense strategies to prevent getting and spreading the flu.
Cecelia Bristol, director of the Lang Center, says simple things like washing your hands, covering your mouth when coughing or sneezing, and avoiding people who are ill can help stem the spread of the disease.
Students on campus who have flu-like symptoms are being asked to go the Lang Center for evaluation. Employees, meanwhile, are being urged to see their personal physician in such cases.
Symptoms include a fever, sore throat, cough, body aches, fatigue, chills, and occasional nausea or diarrhea.
Two school districts in the area – Belvidere and Kinnikinnick – were closed temporarily in the wake of reported cases in their schools, but have now reopened. There have been three confirmed case of the flu identified in Winnebago County and two probable cases. Statewide, there have been 225 confirmed cases.
Rockford College students and employees considering travel to another
country are being urged to consult the Web site of the Centers for
Disease Control (www.cdc.gov/travel) for travel alerts and to check in with the Lang Center before and after the trip.
For more information, contact the Lang Center at 815-226-4083.
