The musical “Sweet Smell of Success” will be performed at Rockford College May 7 – 9 at 8 p.m. in the college’s Maddox Theatre. This is one week later than originally announced due to problems in the theatre. With the change, there will be no Sunday performance.

Based on the 1957 novel by Ernest Lehman and later adopted as a movie before debuting on Broadway in 2002, the musical is set in New York City in 1952 and follows the exploits of gossip columnist JJ Hunsecker, syndicated to 60 million readers across America. JJ has the goods on just about everyone in the U.S., from the President to the latest starlet. Meanwhile everyone, including J. Edgar Hoover, Sen. Joe McCarthy and a battalion of hungry press agents seek to attach their news to a client that JJ might plug.

A Drama Desk award nominee in 2002 and nominee for outstanding musical in the 2002 Tony Awards, “Sweet Smell of Success” is the final Rockford College musical of the season.

Tickets purchased for the original dates are still valid and any change in dates will be handled through the Rockford College box office. Cost is $10 for adults and $7 for students and seniors.  For more information, contact the college box office, phone 815-226-4100. The performance contains mature content.
