ROCKFORD, IL – Over the past several seasons, the Rockford College softball team has played their home games at several locations throughout the Rockford area for a myriad of reasons. This year, the Regents actually had their home opener on campus and they opened the season at the Ernst E. Smith Athletics Field with a bang, defeating Maranatha Baptist Bible College 29-1 and 27-1. The wins extended Rockford’s win streak to four and improved their record to 11-9 (3-3 NAC).
Rockford wasted no time gaining control of the game, scoring 20 runs in the bottom of the first inning. Rockford’s 20 runs ranks second all-time in Division III for runs in an inning (22 - Salisbury vs. Gallaudet 4/10/2007). That was not the only record Rockford broke during game one. Sophomore Aria Ruotsi (Zion, IL/ Zion-Benton) set a new school record with five hits. The Regents also set records for runs in a game (29) and walks (14). Every Regent recorded at least one run scored and an RBI’s. Junior pitcher Aletha Cunningham (Byron, IL/ Byron) allowed four hits and struck out seven through five innings.
The Regents continued their offense through game two, lighting up the scoreboard to the tune of 27 runs through the game’s first three innings. Junior Tori Turman (Winnebago, IL/ Winnebago) tied Ruotsi’s record for hits with five, while the Regents set team records with 28 hits and 27 RBI’s. Each Regents player recorded at least two RBI’s in the victory. Sophomore Kristi Durlak (Lake Villa, IL/ Lakes Community) allowed just one hit over five innings to record her first collegiate pitching victory.
Rockford will travel to River Forest, IL on Saturday to face Dominican University in Northern Athletics Conference action. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
