CHARLESTON, IL – Rockford College opened their collegiate outdoor track season at the Eastern Illinois “Big Blue Classic” Track & Field Meet on the campus of Eastern Illinois University, competing against a multitude of quality Division I teams, on an excellent facility and under near-perfect weather conditions. According to Rockford’s Head Cross Country and Track Coach Roger Fredrickson, “This was an excellent opportunity for us to compete against quality athletes from Eastern Illinois, Indiana State, University of Illinois, Illinois State, Rend Lake, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and the list goes on and on. For many of our freshmen it was their first collegiate outdoor meet and a chance to run on the track that hosts the IHSA State Championships. At his meet they don’t keep team scores, it’s all about individual performances, and we certainly had some good ones out there today.”

It was the first outdoor meet of the season for Rockford and highlighted by a 4:02.60 record-breaking 1500 meter performance from “All-Conference” junior Matt Lindgren (Oak Forest, IL / Oak Forest). Lindgren broke the previous record of 4:05.19 held by Rockford College Assistant Coach Chad Zeman (in the first 1500 meter race of his career.

Lindgren is an “All-Conference” performer in cross-country, indoor, and outdoor track, who also hold the Rockford College and Northern Athletic Conference records for 800 meters at 1:56.78 and 1:56.16 respectively. In addition to his individual conference championships, he was a member of the 2008 Conference Championship Cross Country Team, 2007 Distance Medley Conference Championship Team, and school record holding 4x400 indoor and outdoor teams.

Coach Fredrickson had high praise for Lindgren’s performance noting, “Matt’s a quality student-athlete, a pleasure to work with, and he really put it all together on the right day. In the past he’s been a specialist at 800 and 400 meters but had the courage to extend his competitive range and in reality just opened another door of opportunity. Matt broke a record today that was held in high regard by everyone in our program and someday another young gun will come along and try to surpass this record – and that’s the fuel that keeps traditions and championships alive.”

Rockford’s next meet will be the Benedictine Invitational on Saturday April 18th.
