Regents Put Out Prairie Fire

GALESBURG, IL – The Rockford College Regents softball team continued their improved play with a pair of non-conference wins at Knox College on Saturday. Rockford defeated the Prairie Fire 10-4 and 5-2 to even their record at 9-9.
The Regents got off to a slow start, trailing 4-1 going into the sixth inning. Rockford’s bats woke up in the sixth inning, as nine batters reached the plate, eight of them reaching base. Rockford tallied four runs on four hits in the inning to take a 5-4 lead. In the top of the seventh, Rockford continued their solid offense, adding five runs on four hits to extend their lead to 10-4.
Junior Aletha Cunningham (Byron, IL/ Byron) recorded eight strikeouts in the victory. Cunningham, Jackie Vensel (Belvidere, IL/ Belvidere), and Kristi Durlak (Lake Villa, IL/ Lakes Community) had two hits each, while Chrissy Koblosh (Yonkers, NY/ Our Lady of Victory) and Jessica Starr (Evergreen Park, IL/ Evergreen Park) knocked in two runs each in the win.
Rockford continued their solid offense early in game two, as the Regents plated four runs in the top of the first inning. After a walk and two errors, Starr stepped to the plate and cleared the bases with a grand slam that proved to be all of the offense that Rockford needed. Cunningham continued her solid performance on the mound, allowing just three hits through seven innings.
Rockford will host Maranatha Baptist Bible College in a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
