LOVES PARK, IL – It had been nearly two weeks since the Rockford College Regents baseball team had taken the field and the rust showed early in Saturday’s doubleheader against Dominican University.  After a few innings to warm up, Rockford defended its home field with a 6-5 extra innings victory and a 12-2 offensive explosion to sweep the Stars and improve to 10-3 on the year.

Rockford struggled with their offensive timing early in the day’s first game.  Not only were the team fighting cold and windy weather conditions, but Rockford had not faced game conditions since a March 23 win over North Park University.  Rockford trailed 5-1 entering the bottom of the fourth inning when they started showing signs of regaining their offensive swagger.  RBI’s by Shaun Dascher (Lena, IL/ Lena-Winslow) and Tyler Clay (Sammamish, WA/ Eastlake) cut Rockford’s deficit to 5-3.  Senior pitcher Jeff Jacobson (Janesville, WI/ Craig) shut down the Stars offense over the next five innings, giving Rockford a chance late in the game.  With two outs in the eighth inning, senior Chris Brockman (Freedom, WI/ Freedom) struck again, connecting for a 2-run double to left center, scoring Dascher and Clay to tie the game at five.   The Regents managed to put base runners in scoring position in both the 9th and 10th innings, but failed to get the big hit when needed.  After two solid innings pitched by sophomore Ben Korth (Freeport, IL/ Orangeville), the Regents managed to load the bases in the bottom of the 11th.  For the third time, Clay was involved in a Regents scoring play.  Clay’s single to left field scored Jimmy Polster (Spring Valley, IL/ St. Bede), giving Rockford the 6-5 win.

Clay and Brockman combined for four of Rockford’s eight hits and drove in a combined five runs in game one.

Rockford continued their success early in game two, wasting no time jumping on stars pitching.  Rockford jumped out to a 10-0 lead after just three innings.  Leading 11-2, sophomore Nathan Riley’s (Rockford, IL/ Jefferson) RBI single in the bottom of the eighth ended the game via the mercy rule, giving Rockford the 12-2 win.  Junior pitcher Travis Mohr (Bryant, IA/ Northeast) controlled the Stars offense through six innings, allowing just two runners to reach second base.

Rockford will host Carthage College on Tuesday at Road Ranger Stadium.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
