ROCKFORD, IL – It hasn’t taken long for Rockford College junior Eric Nicholson (Stillman Valley, IL/ Rock Valley CC) to make his presence felt on the 2009 Regents baseball team. Nicholson’s dominating offensive performance in Rockford’s home-opening sweep of Wheaton (IL) College was good enough for the Regents’ designated hitter/ outfielder to be named Northern Athletics Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of March 16-22.
The junior business management major completed the two-game sweep 5-5, including two doubles, a triple, and home run, five RBI’s and five runs scored. Nicholson’s most important run scored and RBI came late in the night cap. Nicholson’s walk in the bottom of the fifth inning was Rockford’s 11th of the game and his RBI double in the bottom of the sixth game Rockford their eventual game winning margin.
For the season, Nicholson is tied for the NAC lead in batting (.500) and number one in on-base percentage (.591) and slugging percentage (.969). Nicholson leads Rockford with two triples and two home runs and is ranks among team leaders in hits (16), runs (16), and total bases (31).
Nicholson will try to continue his hot streak on Saturday when the Regents (8-3) host Aurora University in a NAC doubleheader at Road Ranger Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
