LOVES PARK, IL – The location may be different, but result remains the same. The Rockford College baseball team picked up exactly where they left the field in Arizona with a sweep of visiting Wheaton (IL) College at Road Ranger Stadium. Rockford enjoyed the beautiful March day to the tune of 15-0 and 12-11 victories.
In the day’s first game, the Regents jumped all over the Thunder in the first inning. Twelve Regents came to the plate and eight crossed the plate. Rockford took advantage of six hits and four hit batters to establish control after the first inning. For the game, all nine starters recorded base hits and eight players scored runs. Junior Eric Nicholson (Stillman Valley, IL/ Rock Valley CC) went 3-3 with a single, double, and triple, two RBI’s and two runs scored. Fellow junior JT Stanfield (Mokena, IL/ Joliet JC) went 2-4 with three runs scored and three RBI. Junior Kevin Patterson (Manhattan, IL/ Lincolnway Central) recorded his second win of the season, scattering six hits over five innings, and keeping the Thunder scoreless, despite two bases loaded jams.
Wheaton took advantage of two first inning Rockford errors in game two to establish a 3-0 lead after the top of the first inning. They extended their lead with three more runs in the top of the third. Rockford responded in the bottom of the third, plating four runs on four hits and to walks. The offense continued in the fourth, when the Regents plated four more runs, including a Nicholson solo home run. Both teams scored runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but Rockford’s run in the bottom of the sixth, off an RBI double by Nicholson, proved to be the winning margin. Sophomore Will Kuchelmeister (Kaukauna, IL/ Kaukauna), who improved to 2-1 on the year, allowed six runs over five innings, striking out seven. Ben Korth (Freeport, IL/ Orangeville) recorded his second save of the year. Nicholson, Shaun Dascher (Lena, IL/ Lena-Winslow) and Tyler Clay (Sammamish, WA/ Eastlake) recorded two hits each for Rockford. Nicholson added three more RBI's and scored three runs.
The Regents will travel to Chicago, IL on Monday to face North Park University at 5:00 p.m.
