PHOENIX, AZ - Over the last two years, the Regents have won the Northern Athletics Conference post-season tournament despite poor showings during their spring trips. During those 14 games, Rockford won only five to open what would prove to be very successful seasons. This season, the Regents again opened their season in Phoenix, Arizona in the RussMatt Greater Phoenix Invitational. This season, the Regents completed the trip with a 5-3 record, with wins over Simpson (14-6), North Park (13-3), Macalester (14-5) and two over Monmouth (10-9 and 13-4).
The first Monmouth victory came in extra innings after a shocking 22-0 defeat to Division II St. Cloud State. Senior first baseman Chris Brockman (Freedom, WI/ Freedom) hit a three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game at 9-9. Brockman scored his third and final run of the game in the bottom of the 11th inning when he scored the game-winning run on a walk-off single by junior JT Stanfield (Mokena, IL/ Joliet JC).
Brockman led the Regents offensive attack, going 15-36 with 12 RBI on the trip. Senior catcher Rob Wiest (Machesney Park, IL/ Harlem) added 13 RBI for the Regents. Juniors Travis Mohr (Bryant, IA/ Northeast) and Kevin Patterson (Manhattan, IL/ Lincolnway Central) and sophomore Will Kuchelmeister (Kaukauna, WI/ Kaukauna) recorded two wins each on the trip.
