FT. MYERS, FL - The Rockford College softball team returned from their annual trip to Fort Myers, Florida with a much better outlook on the upcoming season than it has in the last few years. After a week of sunny skies and 85 degree temperatures, the Regents returned to Rockford with a 5-5 record at the Gene Cusick Collegiate Classic.
Rockford struggled in their first game, a 7-1 loss against Olivet College, before reeling off four consecutive victories by a total score of 44-14. After a 6-0 loss at the hands of St. Joseph’s College of Maine, the Regents got back into the win column with an 8-0 victory over Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the day’s first game. In the Thursday nightcap, Rockford failed to connect on the big hit, leading to a 3-2 extra inning loss to North Park University. Rockford extended their losing skid to three with losses to Ohio Wesleyan and Carroll on the final day of the trip.
Offensively, Rockford was led by junior pitcher Aletha Cunningham (Bryon, IL/ Byron) and sophomore Kristi Durlak (Lake Villa, IL/ Grant), who each record 10 hits through the week. Sophomore shortstop Aria Ruotsi (Zion, IL/ Zion-Benton) led Rockford with 11 RBI’s during the trip. Cunningham pitched all 10 games for the Regents, recording 40 strike outs against only 19 walks with a 2.85 earned run average.
The Regents will face Eureka College on Saturday, March 21 in a doubleheader. They will make their first home appearance on Sunday, April 5 at 12:00 p.m. with a visit from MSOE.
