ROCKFORD, IL – The 2008-09 Rockford College women’s basketball team was a picture of youth. The team included a new coaching staff, six first-year Regents, two second year players, and one fourth year senior. The Regents managed their second consecutive appearance in the Northern Athletics Conference post-season tournament. Though they completed the 2008-09 campaign with just eight wins, two Regents were rewarded for their play with All-Northern Athletics Conference honors.
Freshman Britney Curry (Merrillville, IN/ Merrillville) received All-NAC Honorable Mention and was named to the NAC All-Freshman Teamfor her first collegiate season. Curry led Rockford with 14.1 points per game, while grabbing 5.3 rebounds and recording 2.3 steals per game.
Rockford’s lone four-year senior Kim Nielsen (Evergreen Park, IL/ Evergreen Park) was named to the inaugural Northern Athletics Conference All-Sportsmanship Team. The distance shooting accounting major averaged 9.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Nielsen’s 41 three-pointers set a new Rockford College for three-pointers made in a career (125), breaking Paula Jones record of 110. The 41 made three’s also give Nielsen the top three three-point seasons in school history.
“Both of these ladies were huge parts of our team this year,” said Rockford’ first-year head coach Jessica Stanek. “Britney’s maturity and leadership were so much better than one would expect from a freshman. Kim has done so much for our program over her four year. She has set an example for our team with her work both on the court and in the classroom. She will be sorely missed.”
