KENOSHA, WI – Rockford College sent nine runners to the Northern Athletic Conference Track & Field Conference Championships and returned with seven
“All Conference” medalists, one conference champion, two school records, and ten personal best performances.
Junior Matt Lindgren (Oak Forest, IL/ Oak Forest) defended his 800-meter championship with a strong move just after the 400-meter mark that no one could react to. It was the third 800-meter championship in Lindgren’s collegiate career – having won both the 800 indoor and outdoor titles in 2008. Lindgren holds the conference indoor record at 1:56.78 and outdoor record at 1:56.16.
Junior Seth Lagerhausen (Mesa, AZ/ Dobson) finished 3rd in the 5,000 meters with a school record breaking performance of 16:09.32 - after being ranked 7th going into the finals.
Freshman Bobby Tassone (Sandwich, IL/ Sandwich) continued his streak of school record-breaking performances with a 24.70 in the 200-meter preliminaries and a personal best 7.12 in the 55 meter dash.
In one of the most competitive and exciting races of the day, Senior Tony Hardin (St. Peters, MO/ Howell Central) went from being ranked 5th in the 3,000 meters to a 2nd place finish - thanks to a powerful surge over the last 800 meters – where Tony passed three of the toughest distance runners in the conference who could not answer the challenge.
In what may have been the biggest surprise of the day – freshmen Victor Reyes(Winthrop Harbor, IL/ Benton Harbor), Jeff Orlowski (Ottawa, IL/ Ottawa), and Tyler Mendenhall (Prophetstown, IL/ Prophetstown), combined with junior Randy Ebert (Belvidere, IL/ Marengo) to put together a young Distance Medley Relay team that finished 3rd behind personal best performances and a stellar anchor leg from Mendenhall.
Reyes led off the Distance Medley team that finished 3rd, then came back to finish 5th in the mile and 8th in the 3,000 meters.
According to Coach Fredrickson, “We came in here today with nine athletes and finished with four teams in front of us and four teams behind us. It’s really is a great accomplishment and speaks volumes to their hard work and loyalty to the program”
“All Conference” performers must finish in the top three at the Conference Championships.
