MILWAUKEE, WI – For the second consecutive year, the Rockford College women’s basketball team fought their way into the Northern Athletics Conference tournament. Last season, as the sixth seed in the tournament, Rockford fell to Concordia University Chicago 53-41. This year, the Regents faced a stiff, uphill battle as the tournament’s eighth seed. They entered Tuesday’s game against top seed Wisconsin Lutheran College having already lost to the Warriors 95-64 in December, a result that did not stop the Regents from putting up a fight.
During the game’s first half, the Regents came out hot, shooting 48.3% from the floor. They managed an early lead, but the Warriors held firm, eventually building a 14 point lead with 6:04 remaining in the half. Rockford ended the half with a 10-4 run to cut the deficit to six points. Freshman Britney Curry (Merrillville, IN/ Merrillville) led the Regents with 12 points on 6-8 shooting in the game's opening 20 minutes.
The Regents faced an uphill battle with their season down to its final 20 minutes. Unfortunately for the Regents, as well as they shot in the first half, they shot just as poorly in the second. Rockford shot just 19.4% from the field which gave WLC the opportunity to maintain a double-digit cushion throughout most of the second half.
Curry and fellow freshman Erin Decker (Naperville, IL/ Waubonsie Valley) led the Regents with 17 and 12 points, respectively. Curry also grabbed six rebounds and recorded seven steals
In their final game in the Regents jersey, seniors Amber Lee (Rockford, IL/ Auburn), Kim Nielsen (Evergreen Park, IL/ Evergreen Park), and Tori Turman (Winnebago, IL/ Winnebago) combined for 17 points and 12 rebounds.
The Regents finished the 2008-09 season 8-18 (6-11 NAC).
