ROCKFORD, IL – Though the Rockford College women’s basketball team lost a tough game to Edgewood on Senior Day, the Regents’ seniors were back in full force leading Rockford to a 65-49 win over visiting Marian University in the final Seaver Center appearance of their careers.
Rockford played what could have been their worst first half of the season, but lucky for them the Sabers did as well. Rockford shot just 18.2% from the floor including 0-6 from beyond the arc and only 5-11 from the charity stripe. Only five Regents scored in the half, led by freshman Britney Curry’s (Merrillville, IN/ Merrillville) nine points. As bad as the Regents played, they trailed only 18-17 at the break.
Regents head coach Jessica Stanek and her staff should bottle whatever they did at the half, because a different Regents team emerged from the locker room. Rockford scored a season-high 48 points in the second half on 54.5% shooting, including 6-8 from three point range and 6-6 from the free throw line. Seniors Amber Lee (Rockford, IL/ Auburn), Kim Nielsen (Evergreen Park, IL/ Evergreen Park), and Tori Turman (Winnebago, IL/ Winnebago) combined for 33 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, and four steals against only two turnovers in the second half after joining for just two points in the game’s opening stanza.
Curry led the Regents with 22 points, shooting 4-8 from the floor and 5-5 from the free throw line in the second half.
Rockford will travel to Lisle, IL on Saturday to face Benedictine University in the NAC Divisional Challenge game. The ladies will open the Northern Athletics Conference post-season tournament on Tuesday night at a location to be determined.
