ROCKFORD, IL – When the Northern Athletics Conference announced its weekly Student-Athlete of the Week awards on Monday evening, listed among the winners was Rockford College men’s basketball junior Danny Armelin Jr. (Gonzales, TX/ Gonzales). Armelin joins Regents senior Rennell Taylor as the only Regents men’s basketball players to receive the award.
Armelin, a sports management major, has been a major player in the Regents’ recent basketball resurgence. Last week, Rockford went 2-0 with Armelin leading the team, averaging 22.5 points per game. In Wednesday’s 68-62 win over Marian University, Armelin recorded 25 points, including 18 in the second half. After trailing most of the first half, Armelin’s quick seven points led Rockford on a 14-5 run early in the second stanza to establish a lead they would not relinquish. Armelin recorded his eighth 20-plus point game in Saturday’s 99-77 win over NAC North Division champion Edgewood College. The junior was 6-10 from the floor, while adding seven rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a blocked shot.
On the season, Armelin is leading Rockford with 18.0 points, good for third in the NAC. Armelin also ranks as Rockford’s leader in three point percentage (41.4%) and free throw percentage (84.1) and among the top three in minutes (32.4), assists (51), and steals (32).
Armelin and the Regents will travel to Sheboygan, WI tonight to face Lakeland College. On Saturday, Rockford will play a NAC Challenge game before hosting an opening round game in the conference tournament on Wednesday evening.
