ROCKFORD, IL – As the Rockford College women’s basketball team celebrated the careers of their three seniors, they failed to muster up enough energy to defeat the visiting Edgewood College Eagles, as Rockford fell to 7-16 (5-11 NAC) with the 65-60 loss at Rockford’s Seaver Center.
Rockford came out with intensity early as junior Danielle Townsend (Machesney Park, IL/ Boylan) opened the game’s scoring. Unfortunately, that would be the Regents’ only lead of the first stanza. The Eagles exerted some force in the early portion of the half, eventually building a nine point lead, but the Regents managed to fight back. Rockford managed to cut the Eagles’ advantage to three at 27-24 by the halftime break. Senior Kim Nielsen (Evergreen Park, IL/ Evergreen Park) led the Regents with 10 first half points.
Four quick points out of the locker room gave Rockford a 28-27 lead, but Edgewood responded with a 16-2 run to establish a 43-30 advantage with 13 minutes to play. Minutes later Rockford, as they had all game, would respond. A 12-2 run over three minutes managed to slice the Regents’ deficit to five with just over eight to play. That was the closest Rockford would get as the Eagles sealed the game shooting 11-12 from the charity stripe over the game’s final minutes.
In one of their final games at the Seaver Center, Rockford’s three seniors definitely played their roles as all three scored double figures. Nielsen led Rockford with 14 points and seven rebounds. Amber Lee (Rockford, IL/ Auburn) added 11 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Tori Turman (Winnebago, IL/ Winnebago) tallied a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists.
The Regents will host the Marian College Sabers on Wednesday at the Seaver Center. Tip is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
