ROCKFORD, IL – When the Rockford College women’s and men’s basketball teams take the Seaver Center court on Saturday, February 14 to host the Edgewood College Eagles, they will join more than 1,500 high schools and colleges in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Pink Zone, an initiative to raise awareness for breast cancer on campuses and in the community.
“Breast cancer is such a pervasive disease that touches the lives of so many people,” said Kristyn King, Rockford College interim athletic director. “Events like the WBCA Pink Zone not only give our student-athletes the opportunity to raise awareness for breast cancer, but more importantly, it gives them some information that they can take back to their families and communities to help spread the word about the disease.”
Fans in attendance will notice that the Regents women’s team will be wearing pink shoe strings for their game and both the women’s and men’s teams will be wearing pink wristbands. Fans are also invited to wear pink in show of support in the fight against the disease. Game officials will also be in on the action. More than 25,000 officials throughout the nation will using pink whistles to make their calls.
In just its third year, the WBCA Pink Zone, formerly known as Think Pink has already made its mark. In 2007, 120 schools participated in the effort. Last year, the program grew to include over 1,200 teams and organizations reaching over 830,000 fans and raising nearly $1 million dollars for breast cancer awareness and research.
In addition to raising awareness, proceeds from all Rockford College basketball games between January 17 and February 14 will be donated to the America Red Cross.
The Regents will host Edgewood College in a Northern Athletics Conference women’s and men’s doubleheader at Seaver Gym on the campus of Rockford College. The women will open the action at 2:00 p.m. with the men to follow at 4:15 p.m.
