ROCKFORD, IL – The Rockford College men’s basketball continued their 2008-09 resurgence with a come from behind 68-62 win over Marian University.  The win improved the Regents’ record to 13-9 (8-6 NAC).

Rockford struggled with their shooting for much of the first half to the tune of 27% from the floor and connecting on only two of their eight attempts from beyond the three-point arc.  Though the Sabers could not dominate the flow of play, they did, however, manage to establish a nine point lead late in the first half.  Rockford junior Andrew Weber (Roscoe, IL/ Boylan) led Rockford through the game’s first 20 minutes with 13 points and four steals, as Rockford trailed 34-30 at the break.

Regents head coach Ryan Rebsom must have lit a fire under his underperforming club during the break, because Rockford emerged from the locker room with a renewed sense of urgency.  Again trailing the Sabers by nine points, Rockford exploded for a 14-0 run, keyed by seven points from junior Danny Armelin Jr. (Gonzales, TX/ Gonzales).  The Sabers had chance after chance to cut into the Regents’ advantage with solid offensive rebounding, but every time the game got close, Rockford responded with a big shot or rebound.  Rockford also went 9-14 from the charity stripe during the fame’s final minute to seal the win.

Armelin led Rockford with 25 points, including 18 in the second half.  Weber added 20 points and tied a career-high with six steals, tying him with Steve Leathers for the Regents’ single season steals record (59 in 1995-96).

Rockford will next take the court on Saturday, February 14, when Northern Athletics Conference North Division leader Edgewood College as part of a women’s and men’s doubleheader.  In addition to celebrating the career of lone senior Rennell Taylor (Chicago, IL/ Hales Franciscan), the Regents will join colleges throughout the country in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s (WBCA) Pink Zone campaign to raise awareness for breast cancer research.  Proceeds from the day’s games will be donated to the America Cancer Society.  The women’s game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. with the men to follow at 4:15 p.m.
