WATERTOWN, WI – The Rockford College women’s basketball team got back to their winning ways after a two game skid with a solid 78-59 win at Maranatha Baptist Bible College. The victory improved the Regents to 7-15 on the year, 5-9 in the Northern Athletics Conference.
The Regents took control of the game midway through the first half with a 20-8 run to establish a 10 point lead with just under five minutes in the half. By the halftime break, the Crusaders had chipped away at the Regents’ lead. Fifteen combined points by senior Amber Lee (Rockford, IL/ Auburn) and freshman Britney Curry (Merrillville, IN/ Merrillville) and 42% shooting from the field help Rockford maintain a 33-27 lead at the break.
Rockford duplicated their first half effort after halftime, embarking on a 15-4 run midway through the stanza to take a 61-41 lead with just over eight minute remaining. Both team played the game’s final minutes at a stalemate, but Rockford efforts early in the half helped build an insurmountable advantage.
Curry led four Regents in double-figure scoring with 19 points, while recording four assists and four steals. Lee added 16 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Melissa Swaziek (Machesney Park, IL/ Harlem) and freshman Erin Decker (Naperville, IL/ Waubonsie Valley) combined for 27 points off the bench.
Rockford will return to the Seaver Center on Saturday, February 14 as they celebrate Senior Day 2009 with a visit from the Edgewood College Eagles. The Regents will also join hundreds of schools through out the nation in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Pink Zone to help bring awareness to the need for breast cancer research. Proceeds from the game will be donated to the American Cancer Society. Tip is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
