Black History Month events slated at Rockford College

Rockford College has slated several events at the college commemorating Black History Month. 
  • Martin Luther King, Civil Rights & African American History Museum Walk-Through.  Display includes photos, newspaper articles, and other artifacts of the civil rights movement.  Located on the 2nd floor hallway in the Burpee Center. Ongoing through February. Free.  
  • Black History Month speaker, William S. Rhoden, author of “Forty Million Dollar Slavery.”  February 18, 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. in the college’s Maddox Theatre.  Rhoden is a sports columnist for the New York Times who chronicles the challenges of black athletes in our society.  His talk will be preceded at 6 p.m. by a one-act play based on Rhoden’s book called “The Slaves” performed by the Auburn High School CAPA students.  It was written by Rockford College alumna Charlyne Blatcher Martin. The entire evening is free.
  • Gospel choir to perform. A free concert featuring the Rockford College Gospel Choir under the direction of musician and adjunct professor Carl Cole will be held February 19, 6 p.m. in the Fisher Chapel on the Rockford College campus.
