ROCKFORD, IL – For just the second time this year, the Rockford college women’s basketball team managed to win back-to-back games with a dominant performance in a 61-47 win over Benedictine University. The victory improved Rockford’s record to 6-13 (4-8 NAC).
The Regents wasted no in jumping on the Eagles. Just after the tip, freshman Erin Decker (Naperville, IL/ Waubonsie Valley) opened the scoring just second in to the game and the Regents never looked back. By the half, Rockford had built a 32-17 lead on 5-7 shooting from behind the three-point arc. Five Regents also scored at least five point in the opening stanza, led by Melissa Swaziek’s (Machesney Park, IL/ Harlem) eight points off the bench.
Though the Eagles managed to slice in to the Regents’ lead in the second half, Rockford managed to maintain their composure, never allowing their cushion to drop below five points. With just 3:27 to play and Rockford’s lead at five points, the Regents closed the game with an 11-3 run, including 6-6 from the free throw line and a key steal and three-pointer by senior reserve Amber Lee (Rockford, IL/ Auburn).
Lee led Rockford with 21 points and 11 rebounds off the bench. Swaziek added 111 points for the Regents. Danielle Townsend (Machesney Park, IL/ Boylan) and Kim Nielsen (Evergreen Park, IL/ Evergreen Park) each added seven points and seven rebounds. Nielsen’s three-pointer midway through the first half also tied Paula Jones’ school record for career three-pointers made (110).
Rockford will travel to Mequon, WI on Wednesday to face the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons. They will return to the Seaver Center on Saturday, February 7 when they host Alverno College at 2:00 p.m.
