ROCKFORD, IL – In cooperation with the Rockford College Jane Addams Center for Community Engagement (JACCE), the Rockford College women’s and men’s basketball teams will participate in several events over the next few weeks to help bring awareness to cancer.

“This is a great way for our kids to raise some awareness and money while doing something they love,” said Rockford College Athletic Director Randy Schrader.  “Lindsay Kent and the JACCE staff have done a tremendous job creating ACE (Athletics Civically Engaged) and getting our kids involved in various community programs throughout the year.”

On Saturday, January 31, when the Regents host the Benedictine University Eagles in a Northern Athletics conference doubleheader, fans will notice that the Rockford coaching staffs will be wearing sneakers.  They will be joining hundreds of NCAA basketball coaches in the NABC Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers Awareness Weekend.  The National Association of Basketball Coaches has teamed to show support for the American Cancer Society and the fight against cancer.

When the Regents celebrate their annual basketball Senior Day ceremonies, Rockford staff, players, and fans will again do their part to bring attention to breast cancer.  In cooperation with the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, the Regents will join hundreds of other basketball programs in WBCA Pink Zone 2009.  Pink Zone is a unified effort for WBCA coaches to assist in raising awareness for breast cancer on the court and in the community.  In 2008, over 1,200 schools, including Rockford, raised nearly $1 million dollars for breast cancer awareness and research.

In addition to raising awareness, proceeds from all Rockford College basketball games between January 17 and February 14 will be donated to the America Red Cross.  For more information on how you can get involved with the fight against cancer, visit the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org or call 1-800-ACS-2345.
