ROCKFORD, IL – It’s almost as if this story has been told before… That’s right, it has! For the second time in three games, Rockford College senior guard Renell Taylor (Chicago, IL/ Hales Franciscan) hit a game-winning buzzer beater in overtime to give the Regents a 71-69 win over visiting Lakeland College. The win extended Rockford’s win streak to four and improved their overall record to 10-7 (5-4 NAC).
The Lakeland Muskies controlled the game from the opening tip, scoring the game’s first six points. By the eight minute mark, Rockford trailed by a game-high 11 points. At halftime, Lakeland led 40-33 and dominated Rockford in every statistical category. But something changed during the halftime break.
While fans were participating in the Papa John’s Halftime Shoot-out, Regents head coach Ryan Rebsom and his staff were making adjustments that would immediately pay dividends in the second half. By the 15:00 mark of the second stanza, Rockford had managed to eliminate the Muskies’ advantage. Sophomore Taylor Stinson’s (Schiller Park, IL/ East Leyden) sixth three-pointer of the game capped a 10-0 Regents run to take their first lead of the game at 46-44. Over the next 15 minutes, both team traded buckets and fought to gain momentum, but neither could extend their lead beyond four. With the score tied at 61, Rockford had the opportunity to win the game in regulation, but two Taylor jump shots rimmed out, sending the game to overtime.
For the second consecutive home game, the Regents would need extra time to get a victory. Lakeland managed to take an early two-point lead in the extra period, but Rockford immediately responded with a 8-2 run to retake a four point lead. But as if Rockford would have it any other way, the game came down to the final seconds. With the game tied at 69 with 15 seconds to play, Taylor held the ball near the midcourt line waiting for the go signal from Coach Rebsom. Rockford would send the game to a second overtime, or as Taylor had done so many times this season, Rockford would win at the buzzer. With a spin move at the right elbow, Taylor moved to his left and elevated for a 12 footer. In what seemed to be a replay of Rockford’s win over Dominican on Saturday, the ball sailed through the rim as the buzzer sounded, giving Rockford the 71-69 victory.
Taylor led Rockford with 20 points and five assists, while Stinson added 18 and junior Andrew Weber tallied 15 points, eight rebounds, and six steals. Juniors Garrett Staniec (Glenview, IL/ Glenbrook South) and Randon Williams (Chicago, IL/ Westinghouse) chipped in with eight points each and combined for 19 rebounds.
Rockford will travel to Aurora, IL on Saturday to face Northern Athletics Conference foe Aurora University in a women’s and men’s doubleheader. The ladies will open the action at 2:00 p.m. with the men to follow at 4:15 p.m.
