ROCKFORD, IL – For the second time in two weeks, the Rockford College men’s basketball team put a game in the hands of senior guard Rennell Taylor (Chicago, IL/ Hales Franciscan).  On January 3, Taylor hit a 12 foot jumper in the game’s final seconds to lift Rockford to a 75-73 win over Ripon.  On Saturday, Taylor was at it again, lifting the Regents to a 94-92 overtime win over Dominican University, pushing Rockford’s record to 8-7 (3-4 NAC).

Though the Stars connected on the game’s first bucket, Rockford immediately responded with an 11-2 run, building a game-high seven point lead.  But by the end of the game’s first half, the Stars had taken control of the game on the strength of six three-pointers, leading 43-37 at the break.

The Stars maintained their control of the game through the first six minutes of the second stanza.  Trailing 60-51, the Regents made their run, a 18-8 run over seven minutes, led by junior Danny Armelin (Gonzales, TX/ Gonzales) and his 14 points during the run.   Cut to the game’s final seconds when Taylor drained one of two free throws, giving Rockford a four point cushion with 00:19 to play.  After a made free throw by Dominican’s Jeter Marvin and an offensive rebounds, Jeter made like Jessica Salinas of the Stars’ women’s team, connecting on another three pointer at the buzzer, tying the game at 84 and going to overtime.

The Stars grabbed an early five point lead in overtime, but Rockford continued to fight.  Taylor connected on four free throws and junior Andrew Weber (Roscoe, IL/ Boylan) hit a lay-up to tie the game at 90 with just over one minute to play.  Taylor hit his fifth and sixth free throws of the period, then the Stars’ Dan Borys made two of his own to set the score at 92 with less than 20 seconds to play.  As time dwindled and it looked as though we would have a second overtime period, Taylor did what he does best.  With a shake and bake move, Taylor elevated from about 12 feet, a spot almost exactly where he hit the game winner against Ripon.  As the final buzzer sounded, the ball fell through the hoop, Taylor connecting on his 39th and 40th points of the game in his 45th minute of play.

Taylor’s career-high 40 points were the second highest scoring total in the short history of the Northern Athletics Conference.  Armelin also contributed 26 points on 8-17 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds.  Junior Garret Staniec (Glenview, IL/ Glenbrook South) chipped in with 10 points and nine boards.

Rockford will look to even their NAC record with a visit to Marian University in Fond du Lac, WI on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.
