ROCKFORD, IL – The Rockford College Regents women’s basketball team continued its solid play of late, notching their second NAC victory on Saturday, a 77-72 overtime win over the Dominican University Stars.  The win improved the Regents record to 4-10 (2-5 NAC).

Rockford got off to a good start when just six seconds into the game senior Kim Nielsen (Evergreen Park, IL/ Evergreen Park) connected on the game’s first shot, a three-pointer.  It took the Stars less than one minute to take their first lead of the game at 4-3.  That would be the theme through the game’s final 44 minutes, as the game featured 16 ties and 14 lead changes, none greater than six points.  After 20 minutes of play, as one would expect, the game was tied at 31.

The game’s 15th tie came with just over four minutes to play in regulation.  The Regents extended their lead to four points three times in the game’s final minutes, but the Stars always responded.  Two free throws by senior Tori Turman (Winnebago, IL/ Winnebago) pushed the Rockford lead back to three with seven seconds on the clock.  After a Rockford timeout, Stars’ guard Jessica Salinas connected on a three-pointer at the buzzer, sending the game into overtime, a fitting conclusion to this battle.

The Regents used tough defense to gain control of the game’s extra period, forcing the Stars into 10% shooting from the field.  Offensively, Rockford was led by Turman and freshman Britney Curry (Merrillville, IN/ Merrillville) combined for seven points in the period.  Nielsen connected on two free throws to seal Rockford’s win.

Balance was the key to Rockford’s fourth victory of the year, with all eight players recording marks in the scoring, rebounding, and assists columns.  Senior Amber Lee (Rockford, IL/ Auburn) led Rockford with in all three categories with 17 points, eight boards, and four assists.  Freshman Erin Decker (Naperville, IL/ Waubonsie Valley) led three other Regents in double figures with 16 points.

Rockford will travel to Madison, WI to face NAC rival Edgewood College on Wednesday, January 21 at 7:00 p.m.
