ROCKFORD, IL – Five times this season, the Rockford College men’s basketball team has come up on the losing side of a tight ball game. Those five losses have been by an average 4.4 points.  Saturday’s game against Ripon College may have been the change Rockford needed to win some of those tight games.  The Regents defeated the Red Hawks 75-73 in the game's final seconds to even their record at 6-6 on the year.

From tip to buzzer, the game was an even match, featuring 11 ties and 25 lead changes.  Neither side could completely grab the game’s momentum, as no team led by more than six points.  As you would expect with that knowledge, the game remained tight coming down the stretch.  Regents’ junior forward Garrett Staniec (Glenview, IL/ Glenbrook South) accounted for the game’s final tie at 73, connecting on a lay-up after a drive and assist by junior guard Andrew Weber (Roscoe, IL/ Boylan).  After a missed three-point attempt by the Red Hawks, Staniec grabbed his seventh rebound of the game, ensuring Rockford a chance to win the game with 38 seconds on the clock.

After a Regents’ time out, junior guard Rennell Taylor Chicago, IL/ Hales Franciscan) took control of the games final seconds.  After waiting for the clock to dwindle to about five seconds, Taylor began his move.  With a shake and bake, Taylor connected on a 12 foot jumper with two seconds on the clock, giving Rockford a 75-73 win.  Rockford’s defense did not allow Ripon to get a shot off in the game’s final seconds.

Weber led the Regents with 23 points on 9-12 shooting.  Junior Danny Armelin (Gonzales, TX/ Gonzales) added 16, while Taylor finished with 10points.  Staniec, Weber, and Armelin also grabbed seven boards each for Rockford.

The Regents will return to Northern Athletics Conference action on Saturday, when they travel to River Forest, IL to face Concordia University Chicago.  They will return to the Seaver Center floor on Saturday, January 17 with a visit from NAC rival Dominican University.  The game is scheduled for 4:15 p.m. as part of a women's and men's doubleheader.  The ladies will tip at 2:00 p.m.
