DEFIANCE, OH – After 16 days without game competition, you might expect a bit of rust from the Rockford College men’s basketball team.  Fortunately, that was not the case for the Regents as they evened their record at 5-5 with a 95-89 victory over host Defiance College in the opening round of the Purple & Gold Financial Tournament.

Both teams took the floor going in opposite directions.  The Defiance Yellow Jackets has won five consecutive games, by an average of 19 points, while the Regents had lost four of five.  But that’s why they play the games.

Rockford opened the game making their first five shot, taking their first lead at 11-9, just under three minutes into the game.  The opening stanza remained close, through Rockford managed to extend their lead to eight points midway through the half.  After 20 minutes, Rockford led Defiance 56-52 on the strength of 57.5% shooting, including 8-16 from beyond the arc.  Senior guard Rennell Taylor (Chicago, IL/ Hales Franciscan) led the Regents with 18 points and four rebounds.  Sophomore sharp shooter Taylor Stinson (Schiller Park, IL/ East Leyden) added 14 first half points for the Regents.

Rockford continued their solid shooting in the second half. The Regents extended their lead to a game-high 15 points at the 12:38 mark of the second half after junior Danny Armelin (Gonzales, TX/ Gonzales) connected on a three-pointer to culminate a 16-4 run.  The Yellow Jackets would not go quietly, eventually cutting the Regents’ lead to five with two and a half minutes to play.  Though Rockford did not connect on a field goal during the game’s final six minutes, they used solid free throw shooting to maintain their lead.  Armelin, Taylor, and junior Andrew Weber (Roscoe, IL/ Boylan) connected on seven of their final eight from the charity stripe to keep the game out of reach.

Taylor led the Regents with a career-high 35 points on 14-20 shooting from the field, while playing the entire game.  Stinson and Armelin added 21 and 19 points respectively for the Regents.

Rockford will face Calvin College on Tuesday night at 7:00 in the tournament final.  Calvin (4-5) defeated Geneva College 91-65 in the tournament’s other opening round game.
