ROCKFORD, IL – The Rockford College men’s basketball team continued their solid play on Wednesday night against Concordia University Wisconsin.  But for the third time this season, Rockford came up just short, falling 86-84.  Each of Rockford’s losses have been by five points or less.

Rockford (3-3) seized early control of the game, building a 10 point lead midway through the first half.  The Falcons then took over, mounting a 28-6 run, finishing the half with a 52-40 advantage.  Junior Danny Armelin (Gonzales, TX/ Gonzales) paced Rockford with 16 points, including 10-11 from the free throw line, and four steals.

Seven minutes into the second half, the Falcons extended their lead to a game-high 16 points.  That’s when the Regents turned up the defensive pressure.  Over the next 10 minutes, Rockford outscored the Falcons 26-13, to cut the deficit to three points with three minutes to play.  Armelin’s 13th and 14th made free throws cut the lead to one with just under two minutes and one minute later, an offensive rebound and lay-up by junior Garrett Staniec (Glenview, IL/ Glenbrook South) tied the score at 81.  Then, with 2.9 seconds on the clock, CUW sophomore Edward Newton-Kemp drained a 25-footer from the top of the key to win the game.  The Falcons connected on two late free throws making Armelin’s three pointer at the buzzer a moot point.

For the fourth time in six games, five Regents scored in double figures, led by Armelin’s 25 points.  Armelin also grabbed six rebounds and recorded five steals.  Senior Rennell Taylor (Chicago, IL/ Hales Franciscan), Staniec, Andrew Weber (Roscoe, IL/ Boylan), and senior Willie Howard (Milwaukee, WI/ Wisconsin Lutheran) added 15, 14, 12, and 11 points respectively.  Staniec grabbed 16 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.

Rockford will travel to Milwaukee, WI on Saturday night to face the MSOE Raiders.
