ROCKFORD, IL – The Rockford College women’s basketball team snapped a four game skid on Monday night as they defeated the Knox College Prairie Fire 68-57 at Rockford’s Seaver Center. The non-conference victory improved the Regents’ record to 2-4 overall.
The Regents wasted little time seizing early control of the game, building an 11 point advantage midway through the first half, eventually extending that lead to 15 with just under two minutes to play in the half. The key to the Regents’ 36-26 first half lead was solid scoring off the bench. Sophomore reserve Melissa Swaziek (Loves Park, IL/ Harlem). Swaziek led all scorers in the first half with 10 points on 5-8 shooting, while senior Amber Lee (Rockford, IL/ Auburn) added seven points.
As the second half began, the Prairie Fire immediately cut Rockford’s lead down to three points, but that is when the Regents turned up the heat. Over the next four minutes, Rockford regained the momentum and pushed their lead back to 10 points. Swaziek then scored the Regents’ next nine points, extending the lead to an insurmountable 14 points.
Swaziek finished the game with a career-high 26 points, on 12-16 shooting, in only 23 minutes of action. Lee and freshman Britney Curry (Merrillville, IN/ Merrillville) finished with 11 points each and combined for seven steals. Junior forward Danielle Townsend (Machesney Park, IL/ Boylan) added six points, seven rebounds, and five assists, while senior Kim Nielsen (Evergreen Park, IL/ Evergreen Park) led Rockford with nine boards and chipped in with eight points.
Rockford will try to notch their first NAC win on Wednesday when they host Concordia University Wisconsin at the Seaver Center.
